Canberra is the home of the man-made Lake Burley Griffin which provides a magnificent backdrop to the city. The foreshore is home to many national monuments and buildings - including the National Library, National Gallery and High Court.

The lake is also a popular spot with locals. There are some great areas for barbecues, sailing, rowing, fishing and swimming, and the bike path surrounding the lake allows for flat and scenic rollerblading, walking or cycling.

The main feature on the lake is the spectacular Captain Cook Memorial - a jet that pumps water almost 150 metres up into the air. The jet operates between 10am and noon, and from 2pm to 4pm each day. Regatta Point provides the best vantage point, though on a windy day, watch out for the spray. If you're more adventurous, you can always hire a paddle boat and get up close and personal with the memorial.

The best views of the lake are from Regatta Point, Commonwealth Park, Gallipoli Reach, Grevillea Park and Mount Ainslie.
