Telstra Tower rises 195 metres above the summit of Black Mountain and provides unsurpassed 360 degree views of Canberra and the surrounding countryside. Situated in a beautiful nature reserve with many undisturbed animals, Telstra Tower is a futuristic landmark that plays a vital role in Australia's telecommunication network. Visitors to the Tower can see the city unfold from the enclosed viewing gallery or the two open viewing platforms. There is a kiosk with exclusive souvenirs, a relaxing coffee lounge, and Canberra's only revolving restaurant. The history of telecommunications in Australia is a 'hands-on' experience when exploring the "Making Connections" exhibition. The theatre provides a video on the Tower's remarkable design and construction. The Tower, designed by PMG Department in 1972 received prestigious design and construction awards prior to opening. Telstra Tower has now become one of the National Capital's most symbolic landmarks and a major tourist attraction with a total of over six million visitors. In 1989 the World Federation of Great Towers invited Telstra Tower to join such distinguished monuments as the Blackpool Tower in London and the Empire State Building in New York. Telstra Tower is open daily from 9 am to 10 pm seven days a week.
