The Western Plains Zoo is Australia’s premier open range zoo and home to more than 1100 animals from around the world, many of them endangered species. Situated at Dubbo in central western New South Wales, Western Plains Zoo is approximately 400 km from Sydney. The 300 hectare open range Zoo is divided into five geographical areas, these being Africa, Eurasia, North America, South America and Australia. The animals live in large open displays which reflect their natural habitat. A system of cleverly concealed wet and dry moats separate animals from visitors while allowing visitors to get as close as possible to view the animals. Western Plains Zoo is open every day of the year, including all public holidays from 9.00am to 5.00pm. A four hour visit is recommended to ensure none of the Zoo’s attractions are missed. Visitors may drive their own vehicle, ride a bicycle, hire an electric cart or walk around the 6 km circuit. Visitors on bikes or foot are able to freely explore the Zoo by taking advantage of the 15 km of walking and cycle trails which wind through the Zoo’s bushland. As you explore you may come face to face with kangaroos, wallabies or emus which wander freely through the Zoo! Electric carts and bicycles are available for hire at the Zoo or visitors may bring their own bicycles if they wish. Landscaped picnic areas are dotted around the Zoo providing free gas BBQs and areas for visitors to relax. There is a licensed kiosk supplying both hot and cold food and also a souvenir shop.
