The Capricorn Coast is one of the island paradises of Queensland with its southern reef islands. It is in this region that you will find the spectacular islands of Heron Island, Lady Elliot Island, Great Keppel Island, Lady Musgrave Island and the smaller islands of North West Island, Tryon Island and Willson Island. All the islands provide spectacular snorkelling, diving and other great reef activities. On the main land of this region you will find the town of Rockhampton, which has some great attractions such as the Dreamtime Cultural Centre, Rockhampton Botanical Gardens, Cliff Kershaw Gardens and the Rockhampton City Art Gallery. Around the outskirts of Rockhampton you will find the Berserker Range, which is a great place to see the Olsen’s Capricorn Caverns and Cammoo Caves. There is also Mt Morgan near by with its open-cut gold and opal mine and the interesting Mt Morgan Historical Museum.
In the hinterland of this region there is definitely some worth while places to visit such as the Blackdown Tableland Nation Park, several coal mines which offer free tours and the gem fields around the towns of Anakie, Sapphire and Rubyville. The Carnarvon National Park features in this region and is renowned for being very rugged with some dramatic scenery and Aboriginal rock paintings and carvings.
