This region is a definate must for historians and people alike, here you can experience gold digging, architecture and many more symbols of Australians history. Cycling is a great way to experience historical towns, quiet scenic back roads and marvellous wineries. There are five major cycling routes. As well as many shorter rides around Ballarat, Maryborough, Dunolly, Loddon Valley, Castlemaine and Bendigo.
Award-winning wineries and vineyards are sprinkled around the Bendigo and Heathcote district. Balgownie Estate at Maiden Gully is not to be missed. Intimate wineries near Bridgewater, Kingower and Rheola.
Maldon is an intact 19th century gold-mining settlement, with all wide verandas, miners cottages and preserved public buildings.
Sovereign Hill in Ballarat will have you panning for gold in babbling brooks above ground. This 1850s gold-mining town is a living museum. At night a sound-and-light spectacular tells the story of our valiant armed rebellion, The Eureka Stockade.
Walk around the historic centre of Ballarat to discover classic architecture and beautiful Botanic Gardens. Visit nearby Mount Buninyong or the Pyreness Mountains.
Even thought the climate is generally cooler in Melbourne there is rarely times when a big heavy jacket is needed. However, when you venture inland to places such as Ballarat or the mountain regions it can get quite cold. The nights can be very frosty and cold even if the days are clear and warm. In the summer months the whole of Victoria warms to very pleasant temperatures. There can be heat waves in the months of December and January and these can make temperatures reach almost 40C.
